For most wig wearers, wig maintenance is harder than wig styling, for it need clean every time you wear and take time to keep it smooth and shiny. If you also have such troubles or want to know more about the maintenance of wigs, then this blog will help you.
The maintenance process includes two parts : cleaning and caring.
Part 1 Cleaning
1. Use special shampoo, conditioner and wig comb
When buying products for cleaning your wig, you should know that there are special ones for it, because regular shampoo and conditioners have a lot of chemicals in them that may damage the texture of your wig. And wig comb is more suitable for wig, for it is specially designed for wigs, it will not cause damage to wigs.
2. Practice proper wig washing techniques
Rubbing shampoo into your scalp will wear out your wig, and you’ll have to buy a new one sooner than you’d like.
Follow these techniques when washing your wigs:
① Soak your wig in warm soapy water for a few minutes. Then, gently comb the shampoo through the hair. Do not rub or massage the product into the scalp of wig as that will result in residue buildup, which clumps your wig hair and possibly cause permanent damage.
② Gently rinse the wig in clean, warm (not hot) water and comb through. Repeat this process until all the soap is gone.
③ Repeat steps one and two with your conditioning product.
④ Detangle your wig immediately with a detangling brush. ( “how to detangle a wig” is here )
⑤ Air dry your hair. NEVER use a hair dryer on your wig. The hot air will permanently damage a synthetic wig or a swiss lace wig.
Part 2 Caring
1. Wear your wig less often
It’s not that you can’t wear a wig every day, but you shouldn’t wear the same wig every day.
If you’re an everyday wig wearer, you may want to consider buying two wigs and rotating them. The less you wear your wig, the longer it will last. Besides that, rotating will allow you to care properly for your wigs on “off” days.
2. Put down your curling iron
Everyone knows heat tools damage hair, and the same is true with wigs.
When you use a heating tool on your wig the hair gets damaged, dry, and brittle, split ends form, and the hair loses natural shine. Moreover, because wig hair doesn’t repair like natural hair, the damage is permanent.
Hair dryers, curling irons, and flat irons can all permanently damage your wig. Make sure always to let your wig air dry. If you want a wavy or curly look, use non-heating curlers. Keep in mind, most wigs come pre-styled, so you can choose your look before you order it.
3. Keep your wig covered and upright between uses
When you are not wearing a wig, make sure to store it properly. Give out your wigs in a cool room. If you have learned nothing while reading this blog, but heat and wigs must be a dangerous combination.
It is also a good idea to put a small humidifier in the room where the wig is stored, especially if you live in a dry climate. A humidifier can prevent the wig from drying out.
Place your wig on the mannequin head and use a lampshade to protect the wig from dust and exposure.
4. Don’t neglect your hair just because you wear a wig every day
This is the last but not least. Keeping clean hair and healthy scalp is something you should already do. If you have a healthy scalp, you can prevent residues, oils and grease from penetrating into your wig. In addition, with a healthy scalp, your wig will feel more comfortable.
Wig maintenance requires practice and patience, but once you implement these techniques, you will start to see wigs last longer and look better.
Take care of your wig, have fun, and look gorgeous.
